Long Island First can trace its roots back to a quiet, late morning commute on the Long Island Rail Road in October 2016.  As I sat there like so many Long Islanders, coffee in one hand, phone in the other, I came across the news that Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto were arrested on corruption charges.  There is no greater betrayal in my mind than the politician who uses the public’s trust to line their own pockets.  So, I typed a few paragraphs in response to the story in the form of a Letter to the Editor of Newsday and went about my day.  The letter was eventually published and I quickly realized that I was not alone in my anger towards corruption in New York politics and the raw deal middle class Long Islanders were getting from their representatives.

I certainly did not expect to jump into the wild world of Long Island politics so soon after my wife and I moved from the city to Massapequa Park two years ago to settle down and start our family. However, I have spent many mornings sitting at the kitchen table reviewing our bills and many evenings lying in bed wondering how much we have to save to send our kids to college.  I have spent afternoons talking with small business owners who are not doing as well as they were a few years ago and nights talking with friends who are trying to fit in a few extra hours of work because they need the extra pay. Those experiences, and others like them, have made it clear to me that middle class families on Long Island need a fresh, energetic voice to fight for them in the face of the region’s high cost of living and crushing tax burden.

Through Long Island First, I plan to deeply engage with local families to better understand the challenges that they face and the goals they hope to achieve.  I plan to build my relationships with community leaders who can be partners in developing solutions for middle class families.  Finally, I hope to work with local political leaders to develop policies that will position Long Islanders for success in the years to come.

The goal of Long Island First is to be a part of the next generation of leaders who can build a foundation of trust with the community and usher in a new era of economic growth and prosperity for middle class families on Long Island.

I look forward to continuing the conversation with you over the weeks, months and years ahead.

Best,

Mike
